Bénin: motorbike taxi drivers in Kétou must now wear uniforms

In Kétou, motorbike taxi drivers will soon be required to wear uniforms. The local government has launched a registration campaign ahead of this change, which officials say will improve safety, make drivers easier to identify, and streamline urban transport.

The decision covers all six boroughs of the commune and aims to better regulate the activities of motorbike taxi drivers. City hall states the measure will make identification easier, increase passenger safety, and improve overall transport organisation.

To implement the policy, a registration drive will take place from July 6 to 20, 2026, at the administrative offices of each borough. Drivers must bring an ID card to register. This step is mandatory to receive the official uniform.

After that date, only properly registered drivers wearing the uniform will be allowed to carry passengers. The municipal authority warns that violators will face penalties under existing regulations.

Municipal officials are also asking residents to support the reform by choosing only officially identified drivers. Borough chiefs, taxi-moto driver associations, and security services have been tasked with enforcing the new rule.
