Benin and Niger lift barriers to boost bilateral ties

On June 2, Cotonou and Niamey reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepen collaboration across political, economic, scientific, and cultural spheres during an official visit to Niger by Benin’s President, Romuald Wadagni, at the invitation of his counterpart, Abdourahamane Tiani.

A joint statement released after the meetings highlighted the Presidents’ conviction that strengthening bilateral ties is essential for both nations’ progress. They agreed to expand mutual exchanges, particularly by reinstating the regular sessions of the Niger-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission.

The leaders explicitly pledged to eliminate all hurdles impeding closer bilateral cooperation, with a priority focus on reopening the Benin-Niger border. This critical crossing had been shuttered for an extended period due to past tensions, severely disrupting cross-border movement and local economic activity.

To translate this political resolve into actionable steps, the two heads of state established an expert committee tasked with identifying specific barriers and proposing solutions within a strict 15-day deadline.

The discussions between Wadagni and Tiani, joined by their delegations, unfolded in a spirit of warmth and thoroughness, addressing both countries’ shared challenges and key regional and international issues.

The Presidents celebrated the enduring bonds of brotherhood, friendship, and cooperation uniting Benin and Niger, reaffirming their determination to elevate bilateral relations to meet the aspirations of their peoples—who yearn for peace, security, and sustainable development.

Benin’s newly inaugurated President, sworn in on May 24, has made restoring neighborly relations a cornerstone of his agenda. He extended an official invitation to President Tiani to reciprocate the visit in Benin.
