Algeria and Chad mark new chapter with 40-mw power plant project

The power plant that Algeria is gifting to Chad represents a fresh milestone in deepening ties between Algiers and N’Djamena.

On Monday in N’Djamena, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, alongside his Chadian counterpart Allamaye Halina, oversaw the groundbreaking ceremony for this 40-megawatt solidarity power plant between the two nations.

Sonelgaz International entrusted with plant construction

This initiative marks a further step in bolstering relations between Algeria and Chad, following the high directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The ceremony began with a detailed technical briefing covering the project’s engineering aspects, implementation stages, and operational outlook, underscoring the infrastructure’s role in strengthening energy cooperation between both countries.

The plant is overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, which has assigned its construction to Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the Sonelgaz Group. Equipped with gas turbines, the facility aims to meet growing electricity demand and enhance supply security for N’Djamena and surrounding areas. Representing Algeria at the event, Prime Minister Ghrieb highlighted the project’s strategic importance as one of the first tangible outcomes of commitments made by the two countries’ leaders.

Forging a robust strategic partnership

In his speech, Ghrieb stressed the special attention President Tebboune gives to strengthening cooperation and solidarity ties with fellow African nations, as well as his personal dedication to supporting Chad’s development efforts, particularly in essential sectors that improve citizens’ living conditions. He noted that this achievement “reflects the firm political will uniting the leaders of our two brother countries” and realises the ambition to elevate Algeria-Chad relations “to the level of a solid strategic partnership built on effective solidarity, shared development, and mutual interests.”

“President Abdelmadjid Tebboune remains committed to reinforcing fraternal bonds between our peoples and consolidating bilateral cooperation,” he stated, adding that this dynamic contributes to the shared goal of building “a more integrated and prosperous African space.” For him, the project is one of the first concrete results of the new momentum sparked by the Chadian president’s state visit to Algeria in April 2026. “The important discussions held with his brother, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, led to ambitious agreements and cooperation programmes touching several strategic sectors,” he explained.

Cooperation as a driver of regional stability

The prime minister also emphasised the African dimension of this initiative. “This project reflects Algeria’s deep conviction that effective African cooperation can generate shared development through concrete achievements that directly benefit citizens,” he affirmed. According to him, “the Africa we believe in is one of active solidarity, concrete initiatives, productive investments, and wealth-creating partnerships for African peoples.”

This vision is part of a broader approach toward continental integration. In this regard, Ghrieb recalled that “Algeria and Chad pay special attention to major structural projects. The trans-Saharan road, fibre-optic interconnection, and strengthening air transport and logistics will help open up our interior regions and create new opportunities for trade and investment,” he pointed out.

African solutions for African challenges

Addressing regional issues, the prime minister reiterated the convergence of views between Algiers and N’Djamena. “We are determined to continue coordination and consultation on various regional and continental matters,” he assured. He added: “This approach reflects our shared belief in the unity of destiny of our peoples and the need to promote African solutions to African problems while respecting state sovereignty.”

Ghrieb then renewed Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad’s development efforts. “On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s steadfast commitment to backing Chad and strengthening bilateral partnership in the service of development, stability, and prosperity for both our countries,” he declared.
