WAPCO Niger advances community health and livestock welfare initiatives

WAPCO (Niger), in close partnership with the local livestock bureau, recently concluded a highly successful livestock vaccination and deworming campaign across the Zinder region. This vital initiative reached seven pastoral encampments, including N’Guel Eléfi and Tesker, providing essential veterinary services to more than 10,000 animals. This achievement marks the successful culmination of the initial phase of WAPCO (Niger)’s “Healthy Communities” public interest activities, which have now positively impacted all areas traversed by the pipeline.

To further bolster the health management capabilities of local populations, WAPCO (Niger) proactively integrated its internal medical resources. Leveraging on-site medical staff and fundamental medicines, the company launched two pilot programs for free community medical consultations near pumping stations 5 and 6 in early 2025. These trials were met with enthusiastic approval from residents. Building on this successful pilot, a comprehensive needs assessment was conducted, leading to the official commencement of the first phase of the “Healthy Communities” program in August 2025. To date, WAPCO (Niger) has facilitated a total of seven free community medical consultations, delivering healthcare services to 1,249 local residents. Furthermore, the company demonstrated its commitment by donating a tricycle ambulance to a local community health center.

During the execution of these complimentary medical consultations, the company’s team identified a critical insight: livestock represents an indispensable source of income and livelihood for many local families, and herders expressed an urgent need for animal healthcare. Responding directly to these community concerns, WAPCO (Niger) expanded the scope of its “Healthy Communities” endeavors. Collaborating with local livestock authorities and other relevant organizations, WAPCO (Niger) delivered vaccination and deworming services to over 20,000 animals across three key pastoral gathering points situated along the pipeline route, thereby assisting herders in safeguarding their essential productive assets.

As a socially responsible enterprise, WAPCO (Niger) has consistently upheld a philosophy of mutually beneficial cooperation and shared advancement since its inception. While ensuring the secure and consistent operation of the pipeline, the company places significant emphasis on fulfilling its social responsibilities. WAPCO (Niger) continuously champions the Integrated Community Development Project (ICDP), contributes through public interest donations, and extends assistance to local communities. These efforts actively contribute to improving local livelihoods and fostering social progress, thereby consistently enhancing the population’s “sense of gain” and cultivating an external environment conducive to the pipeline’s safe operation.

Looking ahead, WAPCO (Niger) is committed to further refining its community needs assessments to precisely address the expectations of residents along the pipeline corridor. The company will steadily broaden the scope of its public interest activities, ensuring that an increasing number of residents can benefit from the fruits of development. While guaranteeing the safe and efficient functioning of this vital energy artery, WAPCO (Niger) pledges to continue working hand-in-hand with the community, taking tangible steps to promote enhanced livelihoods and foster mutual growth and shared development between WAPCO (Niger) and the communities it serves.
