Tom Saintfiet steps down as Mali head coach: “a true gentleman”
Tom Saintfiet has formally resigned from his position leading the Mali national football team. His departure was confirmed through a letter dated Monday, April 27, which surfaced on Instagram this Wednesday. The Malian Football Federation (FEMAFOOT), headed by President Mahazou Cisset, released a statement on Tuesday expressing their deep appreciation for his contributions and professional conduct.
Reflecting on his tenure, the 53-year-old coach stated that he fulfilled his duties with immense pride and dedication, even when facing significant obstacles. Saintfiet shared his heartfelt thanks with the Malian public for their unwavering encouragement. He also extended his appreciation to the squad, his technical team, federation officials, and state authorities. A special tribute was paid to the FEMAFOOT president, whom Saintfiet described as a “true gentleman” for his collaborative spirit.
Since taking over in August 2024, Saintfiet oversaw 17 competitive fixtures and three friendly matches. His competitive record includes 9 victories, 6 draws, and only 2 defeats. This period covered World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as well as the AFCON tournament itself, where Mali reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Senegal.
Amidst the security challenges currently affecting Mali due to various insurgent groups like the JNIM, Saintfiet offered a poignant message of support. He expressed his sincere sympathy for the Malian people, calling for national solidarity and peace during these trying times.
Known as a seasoned veteran of African football, Saintfiet’s extensive career includes previous coaching stints with nations such as Gambia, Togo, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
