Togo president Faure Gnassingbé boosts anti-terror operation koundjoaré
On a pivotal strategic visit to northern Togo, President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, who also serves as the Supreme Head of the Armed Forces, conducted an on-site inspection of the anti-terror operation Koundjoaré on May 7, 2026. This high-level engagement was part of a broader initiative to assess security operations in the Savanes Region, where counter-terrorism efforts are critical to national stability.
Upon arrival around 10 a.m., the Supreme Head of the Armed Forces was greeted by the Operation Koundjoaré Commander. The delegation proceeded to the Operational Command Post (PCO), where a comprehensive briefing was delivered. Military leadership outlined the evolving security landscape, current operations, and the challenges faced by deployed troops in this volatile border area.
Following the strategic review, President Gnassingbé issued new directives aimed at enhancing the operational effectiveness of the forces engaged in the mission. The visit then continued to the advanced operational base in Tchamonga, located along the eastern border. There, after reviewing a tactical sand table demonstration, he addressed the assembled troops.
The President commended their courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s territorial integrity. He also praised the cooperation between Togolese forces and neighboring countries in the ongoing fight against terrorism, emphasizing the importance of regional collaboration.

In his address, the Commander of Operation Koundjoaré, Colonel Kombaté Latiémbé, expressed gratitude for the leadership and resources provided by the President. He reassured that troops remain fully committed to securing both the population and the national territory. The President reaffirmed the military hierarchy’s support for the operation and acknowledged the gradual fulfillment of logistical and operational needs to boost mission readiness.
The visit underscored a comprehensive approach to security, integrating military action with broader state mechanisms. Programs such as the Interministerial Committee for the Prevention and Fight Against Violent Extremism (CIPLEV) and the Emergency Program for the Savanes Region (PURS) are actively strengthening community resilience in affected areas. Additionally, diplomatic and mediation initiatives led by the President aim to foster dialogue, peace, and stability across West Africa.
Faure Gnassingbé concluded by urging troops to maintain heightened vigilance, discipline, and determination against destabilization attempts in the subregion. His visit reinforced both operational resolve and national unity in the face of evolving security threats.
