How Stuttgart secured their Champions League spot
Stuttgart entered the final matchday in a tight battle for fourth place alongside Hoffenheim and Leverkusen. A draw against Frankfurt was enough to edge them ahead, as their rivals faltered—Hoffenheim suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Leverkusen could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Hamburger SV.
The match itself was a rollercoaster. Stuttgart took the lead twice—first through Chema Andrès (10th minute) and then Nikolas Nartey (45th+4)—before Frankfurt struck back with two late penalties from Jonathan Burkhardt, sealing the 2-2 draw that sealed Stuttgart’s fate.
Key highlights from the Bundesliga season
- Bayern Munich’s dominance: The Bavarians capped off their campaign with a 5-1 thrashing of Cologne, finishing the season with 122 goals—36 of which came from Harry Kane, who also netted a hat-trick in the match.
- Relegation drama: Heidenheim and St. Pauli were relegated after heavy defeats, dropping to the second division with just 29 points apiece.
- Playoff uncertainty: Wolfsburg, sitting 16th, will face a relegation playoff against the third-placed team from the 2. Bundesliga, with Elversberg, Hannover, or Paderborn in contention.
With Stuttgart’s Champions League qualification now official, the focus shifts to the summer transfer window, where the club will look to bolster its squad for the challenges ahead in Europe’s premier competition.
