The English full-back Djed Spence has arrived in Italy to finalise his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Inter Milan. The 26-year-old defender landed in Milan late Thursday night, ahead of a medical examination scheduled for Friday morning.
Financial details of the deal
The move, valued at an initial €31.5 million (£27 million), includes performance-related bonuses that could push the total fee to €35 million (£30 million). Tottenham has also retained a 10% sell-on clause, ensuring future financial benefits if Spence’s value appreciates. The transfer marks the end of Spence’s four-year stint in north London, where he made 85 senior appearances and secured a Europa League winner’s medal.
The deal was unanimously approved by both clubs, with Spence’s personal terms swiftly agreed upon with Inter Milan. The Italian giants were actively seeking a high-calibre replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who joined Real Madrid earlier this summer.
Global recognition fuels Inter Milan’s interest
Spence’s standout performances during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he played a pivotal role in England’s campaign—culminating in a third-place finish—were instrumental in securing his move. His versatility as a right-back and his consistent displays on the international stage caught the attention of Inter Milan’s coaching staff, who were determined to bolster their defensive options.
Tottenham’s tactical shift leads to exit
Spence’s departure was inevitable after a challenging season for Tottenham, which narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the Premier League campaign. With Pedro Porro securing a lucrative new contract and Andy Robertson brought in as cover at left-back, opportunities for Spence were severely limited. New manager Roberto De Zerbi approved the transfer, recognising the need to refresh the squad.
Spence’s final season at Tottenham saw him feature in 44 matches, a period marked by instability within the club. His exit paves the way for a fresh chapter, both for the player and the London-based club.
Familiar territory in Serie A
Spence is no stranger to Italian football. A successful six-month loan spell at Genoa in 2024 provided him with invaluable experience of the tactical demands of Serie A. His familiarity with the league’s intensity and style is expected to ease his transition at Inter Milan.
