Stuttgart has officially punched its ticket for next season’s Champions League, securing a fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga following a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt this Saturday, May 16.
The crucial 2-2 stalemate achieved Saturday afternoon in Frankfurt propelled Stuttgart to the 4th position in the Bundesliga standings, earning them the final German berth in the upcoming Champions League campaign. They will join formidable contenders Bayern, who finished first, along with second-placed Dortmund and third-placed Leipzig.
Battling intensely with Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen for that pivotal fourth spot, Stuttgart ultimately settled for a draw against Eintracht Frankfurt. Sebastian Hoeness’s squad initially took a strong lead with goals from Chema Andrès in the 10th minute and Nikolas Nartey just before halftime in the 45th+4 minute. However, their advantage was nullified in the second half as Jonathan Burkhardt converted two penalties for the home side, bringing the score to an even 2-2.
Amassing a total of 62 points, the Swabian club successfully outmaneuvered their rivals. Hoffenheim, with 61 points, suffered a 4-0 defeat away at Mönchengladbach, while Bayer Leverkusen, on 59 points, was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Hamburg. This remarkable achievement marks Stuttgart’s seventh qualification for Europe’s elite club competition, encompassing both the modern Champions League and its predecessor, the European Cup.
Relegation battle concludes
At the opposite end of the Bundesliga table, the fate of several clubs was also sealed. Heidenheim faced a home defeat against Mainz, losing 2-0, while St. Pauli also fell on their own turf to Wolfsburg with a 3-1 scoreline. Consequently, both Heidenheim and St. Pauli, finishing with 29 points each, have been relegated to the second division. Wolfsburg, who secured 16th place, will now face a crucial playoff match against the third-placed team from the second division, which could be Elversberg, Hannover, or Paderborn, to retain their top-flight status.
Meanwhile, already crowned German champions for an impressive 35th time, Bayern Munich concluded their season with a dominant 5-1 victory over Cologne. The Bavarian giants finished their Bundesliga campaign having netted an astounding 122 goals, with striker Harry Kane contributing a remarkable 36 league goals (and 59 across all competitions), including a hat-trick on Saturday in the 10th, 13th, and 69th minutes.
