Senegal politics: Sonko’s concerns over new justice minister Moussa Sarr
Since the announcement of the new government, tensions have been rising within Pastef, the party led by Ousmane Sonko. The appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Minister of Justice has particularly sparked unease, with Sonko himself raising serious questions about the choice.
The newly formed cabinet is already facing its first wave of criticism, and the ministry responsible for upholding the law has become a focal point of concern. Sonko has made it clear that the selection of Moussa Sarr as Garde des Sceaux does not inspire confidence within his party.
A controversial figure takes office
Sonko argues that Moussa Sarr’s involvement in past judicial cases—some of which have contributed to the strained relationship between Pastef and certain courts—raises legitimate doubts about his neutrality. Speaking publicly, the Pastef leader questioned the rationale behind this appointment, stating:
« The lineup for the Ministry of Justice does not reassure us. This individual has been central to cases handled by certain courts, and that gives us pause. »
While Sonko remains cautious, stressing the need to observe the minister’s actions before drawing final conclusions, he has made it evident that his party will be keeping a close watch on the Justice Ministry’s decisions.
« We have our reservations, but we will assess the situation. We will take the necessary steps from the National Assembly, » he warned, signaling that legislative scrutiny will play a key role in monitoring the new government’s actions.
Criticism extends to the Prime Minister
Sonko’s remarks were not limited to the Justice Minister. He also addressed Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, calling on him to adhere strictly to his technocratic role. The Pastef leader accused the Prime Minister of engaging more in political maneuvering than in the effective management of government affairs.
« I urge the Prime Minister to remain a technocrat and step away from political games. Since he was chosen for his expertise in governance, he should limit himself to that, » Sonko stated.
He went further, hinting at his awareness of certain actions taken by the government, issuing a firm warning: « I know a great deal about what is happening and what he is doing. Out of courtesy, I have been restrained until now. It would not be wise to provoke me further. »
Internal party divisions surface
Sonko’s criticism did not spare members of his own party who have joined the government, despite the party’s stated opposition to such moves. He singled out figures like Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé, accusing them of acting independently when they accepted ministerial positions without consulting party leadership.
« I want to be clear: those who are in government are there on their own behalf. When the time comes, we will address their actions, » he declared, underscoring the potential for internal conflicts within Pastef.
These early reactions highlight the growing political friction surrounding the new administration. However, it is the appointment of Moussa Sarr at the helm of the Justice Ministry that remains the primary source of Sonko’s apprehension, as he awaits concrete evidence of the minister’s direction before finalizing his stance.
