Bénin has officially welcomed its new head of state. Romuald Wadagni, who secured a decisive victory in April with over 94% of the votes, was formally invested as president during a ceremony held at the presidential palace in Cotonou on Sunday, May 24.
At 49 years old, the former Finance Minister embarks on a renewable seven-year term, succeeding his political mentor, Patrice Talon, who steps down after serving as the nation’s leader for ten years.
Economic continuity and security challenges ahead
In his inaugural address, President Romuald Wadagni paid tribute to Patrice Talon, affirming his commitment to ensuring economic growth that would be « visible in the ordinary lives of the population ».
As the architect behind many of Bénin’s significant economic reforms in recent years, President Wadagni now faces crucial challenges, particularly the escalating jihadist threat in the northern regions of Bénin.
The new president has pledged a « firm » state response to security threats while also advocating for strengthened regional cooperation, a key aspect of African politics and governance Africa.
Early signs of diplomatic rapprochement
The inauguration ceremony also signaled a warming of diplomatic ties with neighboring Sahelian nations. Niger, which had experienced strained relations with Cotonou, was notably represented by its Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, who received warm applause during the event.
Both Burkina Faso and Mali also dispatched their respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs to attend the significant occasion.
Observers will now closely monitor President Wadagni’s initial decisions regarding public liberties, especially as several non-governmental organizations have previously accused the preceding administration of tightening the political and media landscape in Bénin, a concern for society Africa and independent African journalism.
