Regional program to boost gender and green economy in west africa
Abidjan, 22 May 2026 — The ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (ECGD), alongside ONU Femmes and multiple ECOWAS agencies, has officially endorsed a groundbreaking regional initiative linking gender equality, climate resilience, and the green economy. The announcement follows a two-day validation workshop held in Abidjan on 15–16 May.
The initiative aims to align regional efforts with member states’ priorities, reinforcing strategies to address gender disparities, climate vulnerability, and ecological transition. It also seeks to mobilise funding for the ECOWAS Gender and Climate Action Plan, ensuring sustainable financing for long-term impact.
a strategic roadmap for inclusive climate action
During the workshop, participants finalised the strategic framework and operational roadmap for the programme. Key objectives include empowering women and girls through climate-resilient livelihoods, promoting equitable access to green jobs, and integrating gender-sensitive policies into national climate strategies.
Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the ECGD, highlighted the dual nature of the ecological transition—both a challenge and an opportunity—for women and girls across West Africa. She stressed the need for targeted policies that ensure their meaningful participation in decision-making processes and economic opportunities tied to sustainability.
Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, Resident Representative of ONU Femmes in Côte d’Ivoire, described the initiative as a critical step toward translating political commitments into tangible action. “This programme marks a decisive shift from rhetoric to real impact,” she said, emphasising its role in addressing intertwined climate and economic challenges in the region.
Dr Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, underscored the importance of an inclusive green transition. He called for policies that create tangible opportunities for women and youth, ensuring no one is left behind in the shift toward sustainable development.
next steps and regional adoption
The finalised programme is set for adoption during a working session scheduled for 29 June to 6 July 2026 in Lomé, Togo. The gathering will bring together policymakers, development partners, and civil society to review implementation strategies and secure commitments for financing and capacity-building.
