Patrice Talon named honorary Hounon by the Vodun community in Bénin

A historic recognition for the Beninese head of state

In an unprecedented move for a sitting president, Patrice Talon has been granted a prestigious distinction by the Vodun community of Bénin. On Saturday, May 2, 2026, the leader was officially elevated to the rank of “Hounon d’honneur.” This title serves as a powerful symbol of appreciation for his ongoing commitment to elevating and promoting the nation’s endogenous religions.

A legacy of cultural preservation and reform

Since taking office in 2016, Patrice Talon has prioritised the revitalisation of Bénin‘s ancestral heritage. His administration has implemented several landmark initiatives, including:

  • The institutionalisation of the Vodun Days festival.
  • The successful restitution of looted royal treasures.
  • The establishment of the Committee of Vodun Rites.
  • The development of the Route des couvents (Route of the Convents).

Furthermore, major infrastructure projects have been launched to support this vision, such as the Ouidah arena and the upcoming International Vodun Museum located in Porto-Novo.

The significance of the Hounon d’honneur title

To celebrate these achievements, Vodun dignitaries organised a formal ceremony to bestow this honorary title, which represents the highest accolade within their community. According to Professor Mahougnon Kakpo, this distinction is reserved for individuals whose leadership has made a lasting impact on the preservation of national traditions.

While a busy schedule prevented Patrice Talon from attending in person, he was represented by Jean-Michel Abimbola, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture. During the event, the Minister expressed gratitude for this gesture, highlighting how current cultural policies foster social cohesion, enhance Bénin‘s global reputation, and strengthen ties with the diaspora.

This special recognition occurred just one day after the president celebrated his 68th birthday on May 1.
