Ousmane Sonko takes a firm stance against government participation in Senegal

Just days after Ousmane Sonko was removed from his post as Prime Minister and a new head of government was appointed in Sénégal, tensions between him and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have escalated. Initial talks aimed at integrating members of his party, Pastef-Les Patriotes, into the new administration have collapsed. In a formal statement released on June 1st by the party’s Executive Committee (COMEX) and shared by Sonko on his Facebook page, Pastef announced that none of its leaders would join the upcoming cabinet.

The party emphasized its commitment to acting « in a spirit of responsibility » and adhering to its internal directives. Over the past few days, multiple discussions took place between Pastef leaders and the Head of State regarding the composition of the new government. A lengthy meeting on the morning of June 1st between Faye and Sonko revealed areas of alignment, but fundamental disagreements persisted over the role and influence of the majority within the executive structure.

Deep-rooted disagreements over governance persist

Following the meeting, the COMEX of Pastef reviewed the situation and proposed revised terms to the President. However, these counteroffers were not accepted. Faced with this deadlock, the party decided to step back entirely from the government formation process. « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government and will not be represented by any minister, » the statement declared.

This move could significantly impact the country’s political balance, especially as Sénégalais citizens await solutions to pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Pastef expressed its « sincere wishes for the success of the new team », signaling its intent to continue its work from the National Assembly, where Sonko now serves as president. The coming days will reveal the true scope of this latest political development at the highest level of the Senegalese state.
