Ousmane Sonko calls for structural overhaul of the African Parliamentary Union
During the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (UPA), the President of the National Assembly of Sénégal, Ousmane Sonko, held a meeting this Thursday, June 4, with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, the head of the continental parliamentary body’s executive committee.

This high-level encounter provided an opportunity for the two leaders to deliberate on the mission, operational mechanics, and future outlook of the UPA. These discussions occur at a time when Afrique is navigating a variety of political, economic, and security hurdles.

In the course of their exchange, Ousmane Sonko stressed the vital importance of enhancing the UPA’s overall effectiveness. He suggested several avenues for reform intended to modernize the institution’s internal workings and bolster its influence over the continent’s major political and institutional strategies.
The head of the Senegalese parliament also highlighted the need for more seamless coordination between the UPA’s advisory outputs and the formal decisions made by the Union africaine. According to Ousmane Sonko, establishing greater harmony between these two organizations would lead to more consistent African policies and maximize the positive results of development projects across the continent.
This audience is part of a wider movement among African leaders to solidify parliamentary cooperation and advance a more efficient governance structure dedicated to serving the people of Afrique.
