Olympique lyonnais seeks Ligue 1 match postponement ahead of champions league push
Olympique Lyonnais aims to secure every advantage en route to a coveted UEFA Champions League berth. The Rhône-based club has formally requested a postponement of its opening Ligue 1 fixture.
The Lyon management has submitted an official letter to France’s top-flight governing body, the LFP, seeking to reschedule the away trip to Toulouse scheduled for 22 August. This request is contingent on the team advancing past the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round. The timing of the league match would fall between the two legs of a potential European play-off, a decisive moment for the club’s ambitions.
European ambitions drive strategic request
Lyon resumed training on 29 June, sharpening their focus on the Champions League third qualifying round slated for 4 or 5 August and a potential return leg on 11 August. Should they progress, the team under Paulo Fonseca would face the play-offs within days. The club argues that aligning these high-stakes fixtures demands careful scheduling to maintain peak performance.
In their submission, Lyon invoked ‘the overriding interest of French football’, a rationale previously cited by Paris Saint-Germain in a comparable scenario. The LFP is expected to decide within days, a decision that could give the club the breathing space needed to navigate a grueling European campaign without compromising domestic commitments.
