Nigerian military blames Boko Haram for child abductions in southern region
Survivors and relatives of victims of a suspected Boko Haram attack walk in Babban Gide on September 4, 2024. At least 81 people died and several are missing after an attack by suspected Boko Haram jihadists in Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria, local officials confirmed on September 3, 2024.

The Nigerian Armed Forces have directly linked Boko Haram to the recent wave of child abductions in the southern regions of the country. The military’s statement comes after a devastating attack in Yobe State, where insurgents targeted civilians in broad daylight.

Military confirms Boko Haram’s involvement in child abductions

In a press briefing, military spokesperson Abdulkarim Dungus revealed that approximately 150 suspected Boko Haram militants, armed with rifles and rocket launchers, stormed the Mafa district in Yobe State on a Sunday afternoon. The attackers arrived on more than 50 motorcycles, striking fear into the heart of the local population.

The assault resulted in the deaths of at least 81 people, with many more reported missing. Among the casualties were several children, some of whom were forcibly taken from their families. The military’s findings underscore the persistent threat posed by the extremist group, even as regional security forces intensify counterterrorism efforts.

Escalating violence in northeastern Nigeria

Yobe State, located in Nigeria’s volatile northeast, has become a hotspot for insurgent activity. The region’s proximity to the borders of Niger and Cameroon has made it a strategic target for militant groups seeking to expand their influence.

The attack on Mafa is the latest in a series of brazen assaults by Boko Haram, which has waged a decade-long insurgency against the Nigerian government. Despite military crackdowns, the group continues to adapt, targeting civilians in both rural and urban areas.

Government responds to escalating threats

In response to the rising violence, Nigerian authorities have vowed to strengthen security measures in affected regions. Military operations are being reinforced, with additional troops deployed to hotspots like Yobe State. However, the insurgents’ ability to strike with such precision highlights the challenges faced by security forces in combating the threat.

Local communities remain on high alert, with many families taking precautions to protect their children. The military has urged civilians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
