Morocco secures 365 million euros from EIB to modernize transport infrastructure
Strategic investment for Moroccan transport networks
In a major move to upgrade national infrastructure, Morocco and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have finalized financial agreements totaling 365 million euros. This significant capital injection is specifically designed to bolster the safety and durability of the nation’s road and rail systems, ensuring they can withstand modern challenges.
The signing ceremony, held in Rabat, brought together key figures including the Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah, and EIB President Nadia Calviño. The first component of this financial package involves a 50 million euro loan from the EIB, complemented by a 15 million euro grant from the European Union. These funds are earmarked for the national railway operator, ONCF, to support a comprehensive rail rehabilitation project. This agreement was formalized by Lionel Rapaille of EIB Global, Mohamed Smouni of ONCF, and Daniele Dotto from the EU delegation.
Enhancing highway resilience
A second, larger agreement was reached with the national highway authority, Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM). This entails a 300 million euro loan focused on the ADM resilience project, aimed at strengthening the country’s motorway network. Such initiatives are vital for maintaining Morocco’s position as a regional hub for trade and mobility.
During the event, President Calviño emphasized that the kingdom remains a primary strategic partner for the EIB. She noted that Morocco serves as a cornerstone of stability and economic growth within the region. This sentiment reflects the deep-rooted cooperation between the institutions, which has flourished for half a century.
Minister Nadia Fettah highlighted that this partnership is not just about numbers but about delivering concrete improvements to the daily lives of citizens. By focusing on sustainable and modern mobility, these projects align with broader goals of economic development and social cohesion. This latest collaboration marks two decades of permanent EIB presence in the country, reinforcing its role as a key driver for climate action and infrastructure governance Africa expects from such high-level alliances.
Through these investments, the partnership continues to prioritize the modernization of transport links, which is essential for the kingdom’s long-term prosperity and its commitment to building a resilient future.
