Morocco places Skhirat accord at centre of Libya political solution at African Union
Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to a political resolution of the Libyan crisis during a session of the African Union Peace and Security Council on Tuesday, 9 June 2026.
Speaking at a meeting dedicated to the situation in Libya, Morocco’s permanent representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, reiterated the kingdom’s backing for national reconciliation and dialogue initiatives among Libyan factions.
Ambassador Arrouchi stressed that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on 17 December 2015 under United Nations auspices, remains a key framework for achieving a lasting solution to the crisis. He also emphasised the need to preserve Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He expressed Morocco’s appreciation for the African Union’s efforts to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent, particularly those aimed at fostering a political settlement to the Libyan crisis.
The ambassador recalled meetings held in Tripoli and Zenten that led to the signing on 7 January 2026 in the Libyan capital of an accord between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the government of eastern Libya.
He also highlighted Morocco’s role in supporting the Libyan political process through confidence‑building measures among the various Libyan parties.
According to the ambassador, these steps are consistent with international legality, the conclusions of the Skhirat Agreement, and the Bouznika understandings. Morocco reiterated the imperative to continue efforts toward a political resolution of the crisis, rejecting military options.
