Morocco joins Mediterranean union parliament bureau with AI commission lead
The Kingdom has been elected to the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) and entrusted with leading its Artificial Intelligence Commission, reflecting the confidence placed in Morocco’s parliamentary diplomacy and its growing influence within this Euro-Mediterranean body.

A Moroccan parliamentary delegation took part in the 10th Summit of Speakers of Parliaments and the 19th plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), held Saturday and Sunday at the headquarters of the Egyptian Parliament in the new administrative capital.
Led by Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, Vice President of the Chamber of Representatives, the delegation seized the opportunity to strengthen Morocco’s presence within PA-UfM structures.
During the proceedings, a meeting of the Bureau and the enlarged Bureau took place, where the plenary session approved the composition of the new PA-UfM Bureau for the 2026-2030 period as well as the leadership of permanent commissions.
Morocco was elected to the Assembly’s Bureau and entrusted with chairing the Artificial Intelligence Commission, a recognition of the trust placed in Morocco’s parliamentary diplomacy and the Kingdom’s enhanced role within this Euro-Mediterranean institution.
In his address to the plenary session, Fassi Fihri underscored, on behalf of the Moroccan Parliament, that PA-UfM remains a vital framework for reinforcing dialogue and cooperation between the parliaments of the two shores of the Mediterranean.
He highlighted that the selected themes—artificial intelligence, youth participation, and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East—reflect a collective awareness within the Euro-Mediterranean parliamentary community of a period of profound transition. This transition extends beyond technological change to encompass the reshaping of sensitivities, cultures, influence levers, and decision-making mechanisms.
Fassi Fihri emphasized that, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco continues to advance its national modernization, consolidate digital transformation, and develop technological infrastructure. This strategic vision positions knowledge-based economy as a key driver for sustainable development, enhanced competitiveness, and the strengthening of Morocco’s position as a reliable partner in the Mediterranean, Africa, and beyond.
The Moroccan delegation, which included Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati, and Ibrahim Aâba, engaged in discussions across various bodies and commissions. Their contributions focused on priority issues for the Mediterranean region: parliamentary diplomacy, artificial intelligence, youth involvement in decision-making, and the reinforcement of security, stability, and shared development.
The proceedings concluded with a call to maintain parliamentary coordination among member states and to bolster the role of PA-UfM as a platform for dialogue and trust, serving the security, stability, sustainable development, and shared prosperity of Mediterranean peoples.
