Michel Platini reflects on the PSG-Bayern Munich Champions League clash

In a candid interview with L’Équipe magazine, football legend Michel Platini shares his unfiltered views on modern football, particularly the high-scoring PSG-Bayern Munich clash in the Champions League semifinals.

With a six-part documentary about his life set to air on Canal+, 71-year-old Platini reflects on his illustrious career and the sport’s evolution. While he acknowledges the entertainment value of today’s football, he questions whether the focus on spectacle overshadows the essence of the game.

He singles out the PSG-Bayern match as an example, where nine goals were scored in the first leg. « That match was hailed as the game of the century after the 5-4 result. I preferred the 1-1 draw in the return leg,» Platini remarks. « Defenders were turned into sieves, and goalkeepers weren’t far behind. Nine goals conceded, yet it’s celebrated as the match of the century? We’ve truly entered the showbiz era.»

Platini argues that defensive brilliance and goalkeeping excellence deserve equal praise. « A perfectly timed tackle or a breathtaking save is just as beautiful as a goal. Yet, two billion people watch football, and everyone chimes in with their opinions. I’m just one voice among them, and I may not always be right.»
