Mali: Jnims latest propaganda video reveals shifting tactics
The JNIM armed group, linked to Al-Qaeda, has released a propaganda video showcasing the 25 April attack on the military camp and airport at Sévaré, near Mopti in central Mali.
This assault on Sévaré was part of a series of coordinated strikes against several Malian towns, carried out by JNIM jihadists and the Tuareg separatists of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).
The propaganda piece highlights strategic shifts within JNIM, according to analyst Bakary Sambe, director of the Timbuktu Institute.
“JNIM has demonstrated its ability to penetrate urban areas, to infiltrate highly strategic sites like the airport and the Sévaré military camp, and to alarm both the Malian army and its Russian allies,” Sambe said.
The coordinated attacks in April led to separatists retaking the city of Kidal and the assassination of Malian Defence Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, near Bamako.
The attacks also left 16 wounded, according to the Malian government’s toll.
“What JNIM has achieved is gradually placing Mali in a state neither of peace nor war, and in that grey zone, deploying an increasingly offensive strategy,” Bakary Sambe explained, also noting the emergence of figures like Bina Diarra, one of JNIM’s spokespersons, to position the group “as a legitimate political actor.”
The release of this propaganda video comes as Malian authorities have announced rewards for information leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders, underscoring the ongoing counterterrorism strategy against the group.
