Mali court sentences French national to 20 years for alleged state plot
A French national, Yann Vezilier, has been handed a 20-year prison sentence by Mali’s justice system for his alleged role in a plot to destabilize the transitional government led by General Assimi Goïta.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly contested the ruling handed down to Yann Vezilier, a French diplomatic agent convicted in Mali of «undermining state security.» In an official statement, authorities reiterated that the accusations against their agent lack any factual basis. «The judicial process against our agent is built on unfounded allegations,» the statement emphasized, adding that Vezilier was engaged in legitimate security cooperation activities. France has consistently denied any involvement, direct or indirect, in efforts to destabilize Mali’s transitional authorities.
Following his arrest in August 2025, Vezilier was charged with conspiring against Mali’s institutions. The verdict, delivered by the criminal chamber of the specialized anti-terrorism unit, also includes a 20-year ban on entering Mali and a fine of €5,400. Judicial sources confirmed these details, noting that the trial took place behind closed doors the day before the announcement.
Conspiracy charges
Vezilier, whose full name has been withheld, was detained on August 13, 2025, during a joint operation involving Mali’s State Security services. Though officially stationed at the French embassy in Bamako, the officer was taken into custody alongside several Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) officers. These officers, now dismissed from service, remain unprosecuted and face accusations of operating an espionage network aimed at toppling Mali’s transitional government. The West African nation has grappled with a decade-long security crisis, exacerbated by jihadist violence linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as armed communal factions. Since seizing power in back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021, the military junta in Bamako has progressively distanced itself from Western allies, including France, in favor of closer ties with Russia.
