Mali and World Bank advance collaboration to transform national education
The government of Mali and the World Bank are currently finalizing a new phase of their partnership dedicated to revitalizing the national education system. This collaboration comes at a critical time as schools face significant hurdles stemming from regional instability, population displacement, and a shortage of essential resources.
Strategic meeting in Bamako
In a high-level meeting held on June 1 in Bamako, the Minister of National Education, Amadou Sy Savané, hosted a World Bank delegation led by Awa Cissé Wagué. The discussions centered on upcoming projects designed to foster human capital and elevate the overall performance of the educational sector.
This evolving partnership is part of a wider national development strategy supported by the financial institution. Beyond education, this comprehensive plan includes initiatives to modernize the agricultural sector and expand access to electricity across the country.
Building on existing financial support
This new initiative serves as an extension of several programs already funded by the World Bank. In March 2026, the organization approved a 150 million dollar support package through the International Development Association (IDA). This funding was specifically allocated to ensure the continuity of vital health and education services, aiming to benefit over one million students by facilitating national examinations and improving learning environments.
Overcoming regional challenges
The educational landscape in Mali remains particularly vulnerable due to the security crisis affecting various regions. The closure of schools and the forced displacement of families continue to create obstacles for student attendance and academic achievement.
Moving forward, both parties will define the specific parameters of these new projects, including the financial structures and the timeline for implementation. For the authorities in Bamako, this continued support is viewed as a fundamental pillar for strengthening an education system that is vital to the nation’s long-term development goals.
