Gabonese leader to visit France in 2026 for strengthened diplomatic ties
The President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, has confirmed an official visit to France scheduled for 20 July 2026, marking another significant step in bilateral relations between Libreville and Paris.
During a recent announcement, he outlined that the trip will deepen ongoing discussions between the two nations, following the completion of Gabon’s political transition. Key areas of focus will include economic collaboration, environmental initiatives, sustainable forestry in the Congo Basin, workforce training, and regional security challenges.
Since assuming office in August 2023, President Oligui Nguema has made one prior official trip to France. That visit took place from 27 to 31 May 2024, culminating in a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. The discussions centered on revitalizing cooperation across economic, political, trade, and environmental sectors, with particular emphasis on biodiversity conservation and climate action.
The 2024 visit also featured a high-level Franco-Gabonese economic forum in Paris, attended by nearly 600 business leaders, alongside engagements with the Gabonese diaspora. The upcoming 2026 trip will be the second official state visit to France under his leadership.
France’s growing engagement with Gabon
President Macron has made two official visits to Gabon since 2017, both tied to the One Forest Summit, a joint initiative focused on environmental governance in the Congo Basin.
His most recent trip occurred from 23 to 24 November 2025, where he was personally received at Léon-Mba International Airport by President Oligui Nguema. The stated goal was to reinforce bilateral ties within a renewed political framework, emphasizing mutual respect and shared priorities. The visit highlighted France’s commitment to supporting Gabon’s transition toward inclusive governance and sustainable development.
Several joint projects were advanced during the November 2025 meeting, including the training of Gabonese security forces, the establishment of a national academy for natural resource protection, and French-backed infrastructure upgrades for the Transgabonais railway.
With this upcoming visit in July 2026, President Oligui Nguema is signaling Gabon’s intent to maintain a balanced and forward-looking partnership with France. The diplomatic momentum between the two countries continues to build, following the Paris visit in 2024 and the Libreville meeting in late 2025.
