Gabon secures vice-presidency for the 81st un General Assembly session

Gabon achieved a significant diplomatic milestone on June 2, 2026, by being elected as a vice-president for the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. This return to the leadership bureau of the UN’s primary deliberative body marks the country’s first such appointment in nearly ten years.

Alongside five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and ZimbabweGabon is set to begin its one-year term in September 2026. This coincides with the grand opening of the 81st UNGA session.

Representing the African regional group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will play a pivotal role in steering the global legislative agenda. The delegation will work in close coordination with the newly elected president, Khalilur Rahman.

Strategic leadership and diplomatic responsibilities

During this session, Gabon will undertake critical managerial and diplomatic duties. This includes presiding over various plenary meetings, ranging from standard sessions to high-level international summits. Gabon will also be instrumental in guiding the UN‘s overall agenda.

Furthermore, Gabon will join the influential General Committee. This body is responsible for organizing the assembly’s agenda, scheduling essential votes on global resolutions, and overseeing institutional priorities.

In collaboration with other member states, Gabon aims to champion the African Group’s core objectives. These focus on sustainable development, proactive climate measures, and necessary administrative reforms within the United Nations. This diplomatic achievement aligns with the strategic vision of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema for the nation’s international standing.
