Gabon-EU ties deepen with strategic partnership talks in Libreville
The pivotal strategic partnership dialogue between Gabon and the European Union reached a significant milestone this week in Libreville, as high-level representatives gathered to chart a forward-looking cooperation agenda. The three-day session, inaugurated on Monday at the Palais des Congrès Omar Bongo Ondimba, brought together Gabon’s Vice-President of the Government, Hermann Immongault, and the EU’s Ambassador to Gabon, Cécile Abadie, setting the stage for a renewed framework of collaboration.
In his keynote address, Mr. Immongault underscored that Gabon had successfully navigated its transition period and was now firmly on the path of institutional renewal following the April 2025 presidential election. He emphasized a strategic shift away from traditional aid models toward a more balanced partnership grounded in mutual investment, local value creation, skills transfer, and human capital development. The recently adopted Samoa Agreement was highlighted as the cornerstone of this evolving cooperation model.
Shifting from aid to sustainable economic partnership
Mr. Immongault stressed that Gabon’s natural heritage is not merely a national asset but a global priority. He called for stronger international financing mechanisms to support ecological transition, balancing economic growth, industrialization, and environmental protection. The country reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism, regional stability in Central Africa, and the security of the Gulf of Guinea.
EU’s vision for a balanced and results-driven partnership
Ambassador Cécile Abadie welcomed the depth of dialogue and stressed the need to modernize cooperation tools between Gabon and the EU. She advocated for a renewed partnership that aligns with shared priorities, emphasizing a balanced approach centered on investment, structural reforms, and tangible outcomes. The EU’s commitment to supporting Gabon was framed within a vision of equitable cooperation that delivers mutual benefits.
