Appeals court maintains detention
Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, the primary opponent to President Brice Oligui Nguema, has been held since April 16 amid allegations of embezzlement and fraud dating back to 2008. On Tuesday, the Libreville appeals court dismissed his motion to nullify the proceedings, ensuring his continued incarceration. His attorneys argue that the alleged offenses are time-barred and lack substantive legal grounds.

In a statement, lead counsel Me Arthur Vercken condemned what he termed a ‘grave violation’ of Gabonese law and fair trial guarantees. The opposition party Ensemble pour le Gabon asserts that Bilie-By-Nze was apprehended under ‘harsh conditions’ and denied access to legal counsel during his initial detention before being placed under formal arrest.
President denies executive interference
When questioned about the case, President Brice Oligui Nguema emphasized the judiciary’s independence, stating, ‘This is not a state matter—it’s a private legal issue.’ He reiterated the constitutional separation of powers while defending Gabon’s judicial system. Once Prime Minister under former President Ali Bongo, Bilie-By-Nze lost to Oligui Nguema in the 2025 presidential election. His detention followed repeated criticism of government policies, including social media restrictions and nationality law reforms.
