Gabon achieves un anti-corruption compliance milestone

Eleven years after the initial assessment, Gabon has officially met the requirements of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) mechanism for reviewing the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption. This milestone was confirmed during a direct dialogue session in Libreville from June 29 to July 1, 2026, led by Séraphin Ondoumba, the UNODC focal point for Gabon.

The achievement follows the resolution 3/1 adopted in 2011 in New York, which outlines the evaluation cycles for signatory states. Gabon’s success is the result of coordinated efforts spearheaded by the National Commission for the Fight against Corruption and Illicit Enrichment (CNLCEI), under the leadership of President Nestor Mbou. The country is now fully compliant with the international standards set by this mechanism.

Beyond compliance, Gabon has taken a proactive role in global anti-corruption efforts. After being selected by the UNODC secretariat alongside Uruguay, the nation became an evaluating state, tasked with assessing the Republic of Seychelles on key areas of the Convention—specifically Chapters II and V, which cover preventive measures and asset recovery. This responsibility underscores Gabon’s strengthened position in international cooperation against corruption.

Key reforms are now set in motion as a result of this milestone:

  • Adjustments to the legislative framework before, during, and after evaluations
  • Enhanced collaboration between institutions
  • Capacity-building initiatives
  • Knowledge-sharing platforms
  • Identification of technical and financial assistance needs

These steps reinforce Gabon’s unwavering commitment to combating corruption while fostering a more transparent and accountable governance system.
