France and Morocco are set to deepen their strategic alliance with a high-level meeting in Rabat, as French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu arrives for a two-day official visit.

This landmark visit, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, brings together Sébastien Lecornu with Moroccan counterpart Aziz Akhannouch and a delegation of over ten French ministers, including Foreign Affairs and Interior officials. The agenda underscores both nations’ commitment to reinforcing bilateral cooperation following years of diplomatic engagement.

The timing marks a significant milestone: this will be the first high-level government meeting between the two countries since 2019. The visit follows President Emmanuel Macron’s historic recognition in mid-2024 of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, a move that reshaped regional dynamics and eased tensions that had persisted since 2021.

That policy shift culminated in a three-day state visit by President Macron to Rabat in October 2024, where he was greeted with full royal honors and a series of major economic agreements were finalized. The visit ended a prolonged period of strained relations, fueled by visa restrictions and allegations of intelligence activities.

key agreements and strategic cooperation

As part of this visit, Sébastien Lecornu will be received with full military honors upon his Wednesday evening arrival. On Thursday morning, both leaders will pay respects at the royal mausoleum before holding bilateral talks. A joint ministerial meeting at the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs will conclude with the signing of several cooperation frameworks—covering economic growth, defense collaboration, migration management, and regional security.

The French delegation will also explore opportunities for increased French investment in Morocco, building on the momentum from last year’s state visit. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez will hold separate discussions with his Moroccan counterpart Abdelouafi Laftit, focusing on the extradition of a Franco-Moroccan national detained in Morocco on suspicion of involvement in a 2019 homicide in Paris.

toward a historic partnership

The strengthening of Franco-Moroccan relations may soon reach a new peak with a potential state visit by King Mohammed VI to France. Earlier this year, both foreign ministries announced plans for a future treaty to formalize a “special partnership” between the two nations, though no specific date has been confirmed.
