Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms support for the Sahara autonomy plan

During a regional seminar organized by the United Nations Committee of 24 (C24) in Managua, Côte d’Ivoire once again voiced its firm backing for the autonomy initiative presented by Maroc. This proposal is intended to provide a definitive resolution to the regional dispute concerning the Sahara.
The Ivorian delegation emphasized the credibility of this plan, which has already garnered the support of approximately 130 nations. They highlighted that the initiative is fully aligned with the principles of international law and various UN resolutions. Notably, the delegation pointed to the recognition of this framework within Resolution 2797, which was passed by the Security Council in 2025.
Focus on political and socio-economic progress
Representatives from Côte d’Ivoire noted that the autonomy project grants the populations of the southern provinces the ability to actively lead their own local affairs, both politically and economically. They cited the regular occurrence of democratic elections and the involvement of local leaders in international organizations as clear indicators of this dynamic.
In addition, Côte d’Ivoire praised the advancements made in the field of human rights, specifically through the efforts of regional commissions and their partnership with relevant UN mechanisms. At the same time, the delegation expressed serious concerns regarding the humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps, calling for a formal census of the residents there.
To conclude, Abidjan reiterated its commitment to a political solution reached exclusively under the auspices of the UN. The nation called on all parties involved to embrace realism and a spirit of compromise to achieve a permanent and stable settlement.
