Côte d’Ivoire prepares to host the inaugural Africa Space Expo in 2026

Abidjan to lead the continent’s space industry through ASPEX

From September 24 to 26, 2026, the Parc des Expositions in Abidjan will serve as the venue for the first-ever Africa Space Expo (ASPEX). This major event focuses on the satellite industry and the broader space economy across the continent. Tidiane Ouattara, a space science authority at the African Union Commission and the event’s Commissioner General, envisions ASPEX as a premier hub for innovation and business networking.

According to Tidiane Ouattara, space technology is no longer an optional luxury but a strategic requirement. He noted its critical role in national security, telecommunications, agriculture, and disaster management. By drawing inspiration from world-class events like the Paris-Le Bourget air show or Dubai tech forums, ASPEX aims to unite startups, policymakers, and investors to forge impactful partnerships.

Unlocking a 30 billion dollar market

Organizers estimate that the Africa space market is worth approximately $30 billion (over 16,683 billion FCFA). Despite this massive valuation, many nations have yet to fully tap into its potential. Through this expo, Côte d’Ivoire seeks to establish itself as a serious competitor in the global space landscape.

Djibril Ouattara, the Minister of Digital Transition and Technological Innovation, highlighted that satellite infrastructure already powers essential services like GPS navigation and mobile financial transfers. He urged local developers to utilize satellite data to create solutions tailored to regional needs, particularly in rural connectivity and precision farming.

Education and strategic development

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Adama Diawara, described space science as a fundamental pillar for 21st-century growth. He stressed the importance of training local talent through specialized university programs and praised the Côte d’Ivoire Space Agency for its role in organizing the national ecosystem.

With the United States and Morocco as guests of honor, ASPEX represents a significant leap toward a structured African space industry. The event aims to mobilize investment and foster industrial alliances that will define the future of the continent’s technological sovereignty.
