Côte d’Ivoire opposition urges political dialogue to resolve country’s challenges
PDCI-RDA calls for inclusive talks to address Côte d’Ivoire’s pressing issues
The Ivorian Democratic Party – African Democratic Rally (PDCI-RDA), Côte d’Ivoire’s leading opposition party, has renewed its insistence on opening a constructive political dialogue with the administration of President Alassane Ouattara. The appeal centers on resolving critical national challenges, including the establishment of a truly independent electoral body and facilitating the return of Cheick Tidjane Thiam, the party’s leader, who has been living abroad.
The call was made by Bredoumy Soumaïla Kouassi Traoré, spokesperson for the PDCI-RDA, during a press briefing held on May 13, 2026, at the party’s headquarters in Cocody, Abidjan.
Demands for an independent electoral commission
In his address, Mr. Bredoumy emphasized the need for a transparent and impartial electoral system to restore public trust in the country’s democratic processes. He stated:
« We urge a political dialogue with the government to tackle the issues undermining our nation. The PDCI-RDA is fully prepared to engage in such discussions, provided they lead to the creation of a genuinely independent electoral body. We insist on guarantees that this new institution will operate without political interference. »
Internal party dynamics and calls for unity
Addressing recent calls from some party members advocating for closer ties with the ruling Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), Bredoumy clarified that these voices do not reflect the official stance of the party, which is determined by its president, Tidjane Thiam. However, he acknowledged:
« We do not rule out the possibility of dialogue. The PDCI-RDA is fundamentally a party of engagement—we have no permanent adversaries. »
Economic concerns and national development plans
The spokesperson also highlighted deep concerns within the party regarding the recent coffee and cocoa sector crisis, a vital pillar of Côte d’Ivoire’s economy. Additionally, he questioned the feasibility of certain aspects of the National Development Plan (PND) 2026-2030, describing some components as overly ambitious and impractical.
Internal party currents and conditions for Thiam’s return
Regarding the emergence of an internal faction within the PDCI-RDA called ‘Héritiers pour la démocratie et la légalité’ (HDL), led by Valérie Yapo, Bredoumy noted that the party’s statutes do not permit the formation of such groups. He stressed:
« The PDCI-RDA’s internal regulations do not allow for the existence of competing currents. »
On the sensitive matter of Tidjane Thiam’s return to Côte d’Ivoire, where he has been absent for several months, Bredoumy insisted that guarantees must be provided to ensure his safety and prevent further political attacks against him. He framed the issue as a matter of dignity for the entire party, declaring:
« When Tidjane Thiam is insulted, it is the entire PDCI-RDA that is being targeted. »
As vice-president of the Ivorian National Assembly, Bredoumy concluded the press conference by reaffirming the party’s ambition to lead the country once again, emphasizing its commitment to restoring stability and progress in Côte d’Ivoire.
