Côte d’Ivoire champions human-centered migration policies at United Nations forum

Côte d’Ivoire is strengthening its international diplomatic standing by actively participating in the second session of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Through this strategic involvement, the nation reaffirms its dedication to a migration governance model built on cooperation, human dignity, and sustainable development.

Monitoring the Global Compact for Migration

This global gathering focuses on the progress of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which was adopted in 2018 in Marrakech. It brings together various states to address the complex challenges of global human mobility.

Representing the Minister of Planning and Development, Dr. Souleymane Diarrassouba, the Director General of the National Population Office (ONP), Dr. Hinin Moustapha, served as the voice of Côte d’Ivoire during high-level sessions. These meetings were dedicated to sharing experiences and reviewing the commitments made by signatory states of the Global Compact.

Strategic advancements in migration management

In his address, the Ivorian representative highlighted the significant progress Côte d’Ivoire has achieved across several strategic areas of migration management. Key focus areas include the enhancement of migration data production systems, the reduction of vulnerabilities, the fight against discrimination, and the expansion of international cooperation.

Dr. Hinin Moustapha specifically emphasized the efforts made in the statistical field to gain a deeper understanding of migratory dynamics. According to the Director General, Côte d’Ivoire has launched a structural transformation of its data collection and analysis systems. The goal is to ensure the availability of reliable, current, and disaggregated information to guide public policy effectively.

  • National Survey: A major national migration survey is planned for 2025.
  • Evidence-Based Governance: This initiative reflects the government’s ambition to make Côte d’Ivoire an African leader in migration statistics.
  • Protection and Inclusion: Strengthening support and reintegration mechanisms through inclusive social policies.

A vision of solidarity and opportunity

Beyond the data, Côte d’Ivoire is prioritizing the protection of migrants. The country has bolstered its support frameworks to ensure better assistance for individuals while minimizing vulnerability. Furthermore, combating discrimination remains a pillar of Ivorian policy, with increased awareness campaigns and a stronger institutional framework to promote a society that respects human rights.

During the forum in New York, the Ivorian delegation also advocated for international cooperation based on solidarity and shared responsibility. For Abidjan, migration challenges cannot be addressed without coordinated action between countries of origin, transit, and destination.

By participating in the IMRF, Côte d’Ivoire is showcasing a modern perspective on migration. Rather than viewing human mobility solely as a security or social concern, the country recognizes it as a strategic opportunity for economic, cultural, and human development. True to its heritage of hospitality, Côte d’Ivoire aims to transform migration into a catalyst for shared prosperity, grounded in human dignity and intelligent data usage.
