Congo Uganda envoy meets on eastern drc security

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has dispatched a high-level envoy to Uganda as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to address persistent security challenges in the eastern region. Floribert Anzuluni Isiloketshi, the Congolese Minister of Regional Integration and Special Envoy, met with President Yoweri Museveni on Monday at his private farm in Kisozi.

Regional stability at the heart of discussions

The meeting centered on the deteriorating security situation in eastern DRC, particularly in the troubled provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri. Both leaders emphasized the urgency of restoring peace and stability in the Great Lakes region, where ongoing violence has displaced thousands and disrupted regional development.

Museveni highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating that “regional peace and stability are essential for the prosperity of our populations. We will continue working with our partners to address the challenges facing eastern Congo.”

Anzuluni thanked Museveni for Uganda’s support, noting that “the president’s commitment to peace in eastern DRC is commendable, and we value the warm reception and constructive dialogue.”

Military and economic cooperation key to long-term solutions

The talks follow a series of joint efforts between DRC and Uganda to combat armed groups threatening regional security. Since late 2021, the two nations have collaborated in Operation Shujaa, a military initiative targeting the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group responsible for widespread attacks on civilians.

Beyond security, Kinshasa and Kampala are also strengthening cross-border economic ties. Infrastructure projects, including transborder road networks, aim to boost trade and regional integration, fostering economic resilience alongside political stability.

Rebel threats fuel displacement and instability

The eastern DRC remains plagued by violence, with the M23 rebel group and ADF continuing to destabilize communities. These threats have led to mass displacements and complicated peacebuilding efforts led by Congolese authorities.

As Anzuluni carries President Félix Tshisekedi’s messages to regional leaders, the focus remains on coordinated diplomatic and military strategies to restore lasting peace in eastern Congo and the broader Great Lakes region.
