Southern provinces under the microscope

The two-day working session, held at the Western Logone Provincial Council headquarters, brings together senior government delegates, regional prefects, municipal mayors, provincial council presidents, and elected representatives from the country’s southern belt. The gathering serves as a platform to assess the effectiveness of local governance structures and identify urgent needs in these strategically vital areas.

Dago Yacoub, the Western Logone Governorate’s General Delegate, opened the discussions by welcoming the delegation from N’Djamena. He emphasized that this engagement would provide authorities with deeper insights into the ground realities and pressing community concerns. “This mission allows our leaders to experience firsthand the challenges faced by our people,” he noted, stressing the importance of translating these insights into actionable solutions.

Agricultural powerhouse facing mounting challenges

Vice-Prime Minister Limane Mahamat highlighted the southern region’s critical role in Chad’s economy, describing it as the nation’s “breadbasket” due to its pivotal contribution to food security. However, he also underscored the growing threats destabilizing the area, including farmer-herder conflicts, intercommunity tensions, and the proliferation of illegal firearms. These issues, he warned, are eroding social cohesion and deepening divides within local communities.

The high-level assessment aims to bolster local governance frameworks and enhance coordination between central authorities and local administrations. By addressing these interconnected challenges, the government seeks to restore stability and foster sustainable development in Chad’s southern provinces.
