Chad sonelgaz to enhance power supply with 40 mw tri-fuel plant in N’Djamena

Chad’s energy future brightens with Sonelgaz’s tri-fuel power plant initiative

The energy landscape in Chad is poised for a transformative shift as Sonelgaz, Algeria’s leading energy conglomerate, advances plans for a 40 MW tri-fuel power plant in N’Djamena. A high-level delegation led by Sonelgaz International CEO Yazid Djellouli recently concluded a critical working visit to finalize technical specifications and operational roadmaps alongside Tchad-Elec representatives.

At the heart of this project lies its tri-fuel capability, a game-changing feature enabling the plant to operate seamlessly on natural gas, liquid fuels, or a blend of both. For N’Djamena, a city grappling with persistent power outages and surging demand, this adaptability ensures uninterrupted electricity supply. The plant’s versatility allows operators to switch between fuel sources based on availability, reducing dependency on any single energy input and enhancing grid reliability.

Beyond immediate power generation, this collaboration embeds a robust knowledge-sharing framework. Sonelgaz, renowned for its expertise in managing large-scale energy networks across North Africa, will support SNE (Société Nationale d’Électricité) in maintaining and optimizing the facility. This South-South cooperation model is designed to empower local engineers with advanced technical skills, fostering long-term energy independence for Chad.

The implications of this project extend far beyond infrastructure. By embracing flexible, multi-fuel technology and diversifying energy partnerships, Chad is taking bold steps to reduce reliance on costly fossil fuels while strengthening its national grid. This strategic move not only signals stability for investors but also underscores the pivotal role of reliable energy in driving industrial progress and economic resilience across the country.
