Chad and Russia deepen military and diplomatic ties for Sahel security
Chad and Russia have strengthened their military and diplomatic cooperation to bolster regional security, including a new visa exemption agreement for diplomats and Chad’s participation in the Russia-Africa Summit.
On July 14 in Moscow, Chad’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a joint press conference, emphasizing Chad’s commitment to expanding defense cooperation with Russia to enhance stability in the Sahel-Saharan region. The discussions culminated in a landmark agreement waiving visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports, a significant step forward in bilateral relations.
During the meeting, Lavrov addressed global tensions, including accusations against Ukraine of alleged terrorism in the Black and Azov Seas, while reaffirming the importance of Russian-African collaboration in combating terrorism. Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby is set to attend the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in October, underscoring N’Djamena’s dedication to fostering stronger ties with Moscow.
The Chadian Foreign Minister praised Russia’s role in stabilizing the Sahel, expressing optimism that joint efforts with regional partners will yield progress in the fight against terrorism across the Sahel.
