Burkina Faso slashes medicine prices to boost healthcare access
Burkina Faso’s bold move: historic price cuts on essential medicines
In a groundbreaking initiative, Burkina Faso has announced a sweeping reduction in the prices of essential generic medicines and medical supplies, with reductions as steep as 72%. This landmark decision aims to ease the financial burden on households and improve equitable access to healthcare across the nation.
Key details of the price reductions:
- Tablets and capsules: Up to 67.27% price drop for certain generic forms
- Injectables: A 53.47% reduction in costs
- Syrups and suspensions: 20% cheaper for families
- Medical supplies: Dramatic 72.73% cut in pricing
The announcement follows a Council of Ministers meeting on February 12, 2026, where authorities approved the measures to take effect on March 1, 2026. The reform is backed by a 3 billion FCFA financial commitment from the government, ensuring that the price reductions are sustainable and far-reaching.
Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, the Minister of Health, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “These price adjustments are designed to make essential treatments more affordable, reduce out-of-pocket expenses for citizens, and strengthen the healthcare system’s fairness and accessibility.”
The recent price cuts build on a similar initiative implemented in May 2025, which was projected to save households nearly 5 billion FCFA. These ongoing efforts reflect Burkina Faso’s commitment to ensuring high-quality healthcare for all its citizens without financial strain.
This reform underscores the government’s dedication to universal health coverage and aligns with broader national goals to enhance public health infrastructure and service delivery.
