Iconic referee Deniz Aytekin hangs up whistle after career-defining final match
Nostalgia filled the air at Munich’s stadium as Deniz Aytekin officiated his final match, closing an illustrious chapter in football history. The veteran referee, who etched his name in memory during a dramatic Barcelona comeback in 2017, stepped away after 254 Bundesliga games and over 650 matches at the highest level. His 18-year top-flight career earned him three titles as Germany’s Referee of the Year.
As the final whistle blew in the Bayern Munich vs 1. FC Köln clash (5-1), several players, including Harry Kane, rushed to pay their respects. Aytekin, visibly moved at 47, wiped away tears on the pitch while sharing his emotions: «After so many years in the Bundesliga, being part of this football family, leaving isn’t easy. I’m deeply grateful, especially with everyone who matters most by my side. The Bundesliga has been incredible, and having been a part of it for so long, experiencing so many emotions up close… I’ll never forget these unique moments.»
Bayern Munich honored him on social media: «Dear Deniz Aytekin, congratulations on your refereeing career! After today’s match, we wish you all the best for the future!»
Fans now await Paris Saint-Germain’s tribute to the retiring official.
