Algeria’s Sonelgaz begins work on 40 MW power plant in Tchad

A technical team from the Sonelgaz group has arrived in N’Djamena to initiate the groundwork for a new 40 MW power generation plant in Tchad. This initiative follows the strategic directives of the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which prioritize the expansion of African cooperation and the development of robust South-South partnerships.

Strengthening energy ties between Algeria and Tchad

The project gained momentum after the official visit of the Tchad President, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, to Algeria in late April. Leading the Algerian delegation is Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz-International. Upon arrival, the group was welcomed by the Director General of Tchadienne de l’électricité (Tchad-Elec), alongside Algeria‘s ambassador to Tchad and high-ranking officials from the Tchad Ministry of Energy.

The importance of this energy infrastructure was underscored by official receptions with Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Minister of State for Finance and Economy, and Passalé Kanabé Marcelin, Minister of Water and Energy. These high-level meetings highlight the strategic weight the project holds for economic and energy synergy between the two nations.

Technical preparations and site evaluation

During a comprehensive working session with Tchad-Elec, experts focused on the regulatory and technical frameworks required for the 40 MW facility. The primary goal was to establish a clear roadmap and form joint task forces to ensure seamless coordination during the preparatory phase. Sonelgaz engineers are now conducting detailed site inspections to:

  • Assess existing infrastructure readiness.
  • Analyze requirements for connecting to the local electrical grid.
  • Ensure full compliance with international technical and safety standards.

This proactive approach demonstrates Sonelgaz‘s commitment to supporting its African partners. By transferring expertise and providing integrated technical solutions, the Algerian public group aims to build a sustainable energy future that meets the continent’s growing development needs.
