Algeria launches new power plant in Chad as part of african solidarity drive

Algeria continues its concrete acts of solidarity toward African nations in need. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, alongside Chad’s head of government Allamaye Halina, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Algeria-Chad solidarity power plant in N’Djamena on Monday. The facility will have a production capacity of 40 megawatts. This comes just days after a similar 40 MW Algeria-Niger solidarity power plant was inaugurated in Gorou Banda, Niamey. Both plants are gifts from Algeria to Chad and Niger respectively.

Having contributed tangibly to Africa’s decolonisation process, Algeria now focuses its solidarity on the economic and social development of formerly colonised countries that face difficulties due to unequal international relations dominated by neocolonial practices of former occupying powers. The Sahel-Saharan region, a natural extension of Algeria, is particularly targeted, with the goal of regional and ultimately continental integration. It is worth noting that Algeria has allocated one billion dollars to its Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development to fund projects across Africa.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Sifi Ghrieb reaffirmed Algeria’s full commitment to supporting Chad, a brother country, in its development process through transfer of expertise, capacity building, and sharing successful experiences accumulated by Algerian national institutions in energy, mining, industry, and infrastructure. Regarding the power plant project, Ghrieb stated that it carries deep economic, social, and human dimensions due to its contribution to strengthening Chad’s energy capacities and supporting its development efforts. He emphasised that the project embodies the unwavering political will driving the leaders of both brother countries and translates into action the high directives of the President of the Republic and his brother, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, aimed at elevating Algeria-Chad relations to a solid strategic partnership based on active solidarity, shared development, and mutual interests.

Ghrieb conveyed to Chadian authorities and the brotherly Chadian people the greetings of the President of the Republic, along with his constant commitment to promoting fraternal ties and strengthening bilateral cooperation to achieve common goals for building a more integrated and prosperous African space. Decided by the President of the Republic, this project, Ghrieb stressed, materialises the first fruits of the new dynamic launched by Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026, as well as the results of important talks with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which led to ambitious cooperation agreements and programmes covering various vital sectors.

Sifi Ghrieb was received Monday in N’Djamena by Chadian President Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. Tasked by President Tebboune, the Prime Minister arrived in Chad earlier that day for an official visit aimed at strengthening fraternal ties, cooperation, and partnership between the two countries.
