Algeria and Niger strengthen ties through energy cooperation in Niamey

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb landed in Niamey on Wednesday for an official visit aimed at deepening cooperation between Algeria and Niger. The visit, authorized by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscores both nations’ commitment to reinforcing their strategic partnership across key sectors.

The Algerian delegation, led by the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies and the Director-General of the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development, arrived with a clear agenda focused on bilateral relations and shared development goals.

During the initial discussions, both Prime Ministers reviewed the current state of relations and explored ways to expand collaboration in areas of mutual interest. Their talks centered on revitalizing joint development projects and strengthening partnership initiatives between Algiers and Niamey.

A highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of a 40-megawatt power plant in the Gorou Banda area of Niamey. Funded entirely by Algeria, this project represents a tangible contribution to Niger’s energy infrastructure and aligns with efforts to bolster the country’s electricity production capacity.

The new facility is expected to enhance power supply across multiple districts in the capital, demonstrating Algeria’s dedication to fostering stability and progress in the Sahel-Saharan region. It also reflects a broader vision of solidarity and shared growth between the two neighboring nations.

In addition to the energy project, the Prime Minister of Algeria is scheduled to meet with Niger’s President. The meeting will provide an opportunity to assess future cooperation prospects and address regional and international issues of common concern.

This official visit comes at a time when political and economic exchanges between Algiers and Niamey are gaining momentum. Both countries are actively pursuing stronger ties to better serve the interests of their populations and reinforce stability in the region.
