Activists condemn politicized justice system in Chad amid rising tensions
Leaders of the Patriotes party gathered in N’Djaména this week to denounce what they describe as a deliberate campaign to undermine political freedoms in Chad. Speaking at a press conference in Bololo, party spokesperson Hisseine Abdoulaye outlined a series of grievances, including the recent eight-year prison sentences handed down to eight opposition leaders affiliated with the GCAP coalition.
Security failures fuel instability across Chad
The Patriotes highlighted worsening security conditions in the Sahel region, particularly around Lake Chad where Boko Haram continues to launch deadly attacks against government forces. In eastern Chad, intercommunal violence in the Wadi Fira region has resulted in dozens of fatalities in recent months, further straining the country’s already fragile stability. Party officials warned that these crises expose critical weaknesses in the national security apparatus and risk plunging the nation deeper into chaos.
Opposition voices targeted through legal maneuvers
The Patriotes condemned what they termed an “authoritarian crackdown” on political dissent, pointing to the recent imprisonment of Succès Masra and the controversial trial of eight GCAP leaders. They argued that the swift legal proceedings against these figures—including charges of illegal assembly, rebellion, and weapons possession—were orchestrated to silence opposition voices and dismantle the coalition. The party also criticized the Chadian prosecutor’s office, the Ministry of Territorial Administration, and the Supreme Court for allegedly coordinating efforts to neutralize political opponents.
The Patriotes dismissed the accusations against the condemned leaders as baseless, asserting that the charges relied on fabricated evidence and lacked credible substantiation. They emphasized that the legal actions represented a systematic attempt to suppress dissent and erode democratic norms in Chad.
International scrutiny and calls for unity
In a bold appeal for intervention, the Patriotes urged the international community, human rights organizations, and advocates of the rule of law to closely monitor the situation. They demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the eight imprisoned leaders and all other political detainees. The party also called for nationwide mobilization, dialogue, and solidarity to safeguard Chad’s democratic institutions and prevent further escalation of political and security crises.
