Three released senegalese fans return home after can incident
Senegalese supporters welcomed home following CAN-related detention in Morocco
Three Senegalese football fans, detained in Morocco after incidents during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final between Senegal and Morocco, have returned to Dakar. Abdoulaye Dieng, Ibrahima Diop, and Aziz Wade landed at the Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) in Diass at 18:25 aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight, greeted by a jubilant crowd.
These supporters were among 18 arrested following the high-tension match. The Moroccan courts convicted them of hooliganism, including public disorder, projectile throwing, stadium vandalism, and assaults on law enforcement.
What led to their detention?
The trio served a three-month prison sentence and were released on April 18. Their return marks the first wave of repatriations, with the remaining 15 supporters expected to follow as their sentences conclude. Legal penalties for the other detainees range from six months to a year in prison.
What’s next for the released supporters?
The Senegalese government and football federation have not yet commented on potential legal or disciplinary actions against the returnees. However, their arrival has sparked discussions about sports diplomacy and the handling of football-related tensions between African nations.
