Tchad cracks down on illegal slaughter network ahead of Tabaski
Health authorities dismantle a clandestine livestock slaughter operation in N’Djamena, seizing over 100 infected cattle and 40 sheep. Authorities act to safeguard public health ahead of major celebrations.
A coordinated operation involving the Ministry of Livestock, the Veterinary Health Coordination unit, and security forces uncovered a clandestine slaughter network in N’Djamena’s Machaga district, 8th Arrondissement. Authorities seized over 100 cattle and 40 sheep, all displaying severe health complications, after investigating a suspicious livestock purchase linked to an international NGO. The animals were slated for distribution as Tabaski festival donations, raising serious public health concerns.
The following day, Dr. Ousmane Yosko Souhoumi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Production, conducted an on-site assessment. Upon confirming the violations, he issued urgent directives to mitigate risks to public health. All deceased animals are to be incinerated immediately, while surviving livestock will receive urgent veterinary care. Enhanced monitoring protocols have also been mandated to prevent further breaches.
