Sorbonne Université and CHIC forge medical partnership in Bénin

The medical and research landscape in West Africa is on the verge of a historic leap. Sorbonne Université, a leading European academic and medical institution, has set its sights on Bénin. A high-level delegation from the French university, headed by its president, visited the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC) to inspect this new jewel of Bénin’s public health system.

This strategically important visit outlines the framework for a promising alliance that aims to bridge the academic and hospital worlds, elevating healthcare services and medical training across the subregion.

A world-class technical platform

Inaugurated to redefine health standards and drastically reduce medical evacuations abroad, CHIC impressed its visitors. Spanning over 40,000 m² with a capacity of over 430 beds, the center incorporates cutting-edge imaging and treatment technologies, especially in medical oncology, radiotherapy, and complex cardiology.

From the discovery of medical care units to the medical-technical hub, the European delegation witnessed the stringent adherence to the most demanding international standards.

“The common ambition is to strengthen the excellence of care, training, and research for the benefit of the people of Bénin and Africa.”

Towards customized training and advanced research

Beyond a courtesy visit, this meeting marks the start of an active exploration phase. The goal is clear: jointly design specialized training programs that directly address CHIC’s advanced needs, building on existing collaborations in Bénin.

By combining Sorbonne Université’s academic expertise with CHIC’s technological potential, Bénin is not only acquiring a modern hospital; it is sustainably establishing a reference hub and a magnet for tomorrow’s medicine on the African continent.

This major institutional encounter underscores the guided tour of university authorities at the heart of the Calavi facilities, highlighting the concrete steps of this cooperation.
