Senegal minister condemns sonko’s remarks on touba

The Senegalese Minister of Terrestrial and Air Transport, Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye, has strongly refuted statements made by opposition leader Ousmane Sonko regarding Touba, the country’s spiritual heartland. During a recent visit, Sonko alleged that illicit funds had been funneled into the holy city, an accusation the minister dismissed as a profound disrespect to Touba’s residents and the foundational principles of the Mouride brotherhood.

Speaking on national television, Ndiaye emphasized that such claims ignored the deep spiritual heritage and moral integrity of Touba’s people. « Attributing such baseless accusations to the citizens of Touba reflects a severe misunderstanding of their dignity and unwavering commitment to the teachings of Serigne Touba, » he stated. The minister also pointed to the absence of key local leaders during Sonko’s visit as a clear indication of the community’s rejection of these remarks.

Ndiaye extended his praise to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, highlighting the head of state’s dedication to addressing Touba’s concerns. « The President recognizes the significance of Touba and its people, working tirelessly to fulfill their needs and aspirations, » he noted. The minister also voiced his support for Prime Minister Mouhamadou Al Amine Lo, commending his efforts in resolving long-standing issues under the President’s guidance.

In a broader appeal, Ndiaye urged Senegalese citizens to rise above political divisions and unite for national development. He reaffirmed his confidence in President Faye, describing him as an unwavering patriot focused solely on the nation’s progress. « Despite relentless criticism and attempts to undermine his leadership, the President remains steadfast in his mission: to uplift the lives of all Senegalese and guide the country toward prosperity, » the minister concluded.
