French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez disclosed Sunday, May 31, that authorities had detained 780 individuals across France during celebrations marking Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph—a 32% increase from the previous year. The arrests resulted in 457 individuals being held for questioning. In 2025, after PSG’s first Champions League victory, authorities detained 592 people, including 491 in Paris. Nuñez also revealed that 57 police and gendarmerie officers were injured during the unrest.

Public safety incidents mar celebrations

Paris prosecutors confirmed a fatal motocross accident occurred Saturday night on the Paris ring road during PSG’s victory celebrations. Witnesses reported the motorcyclist, born in 2002, struck concrete blocks while exiting the outer ring road toward Porte Maillot. Additionally, a stabbing victim remained in critical condition in the capital, according to prosecutors.

Interior Minister Nuñez stated during a midnight press briefing: “There were festive demonstrations that saw a number of disturbances, which aligns with the situation we anticipated and prepared for.”

A driver lost control of his vehicle Saturday evening, striking a terrace and injuring two pedestrians before fleeing the scene. “The vehicle skidded before crashing into an outdoor seating area,” Nuñez explained. While the more severely injured pedestrian remained stable, authorities continue investigating the incident.
