The Cameroonian president, Paul Biya, has officially returned to Cameroon today, August 20, 2026. His plane landed in the late afternoon at Yaoundé-Nsimalen International Airport, marking the end of a 74-day absence abroad.
The 93-year-old head of state departed from Geneva, Switzerland. He left the country on June 7, 2026, for what was initially described as a short private stay. This marks the longest continuous absence from Cameroon during his tenure.
Supporters of the ruling party, the RDPC, gathered in large numbers along the roads leading to the Etoudi presidential palace. The president briefly greeted the crowd from his vehicle upon exiting the presidential pavilion at the airport.
Uncertainty fuels speculation during absence
The prolonged absence without public appearances fueled numerous rumors and speculation about his health. Opposition figures repeatedly raised concerns about a potential power vacuum. To reassure the public, state media outlets like CRTV aired the atmosphere and procession of his convoy in slight delay.
